A controversial but well liked trainer who died after the Hendra virus struck his stable in 1994. Rail had several good horses including Rode Rouge who won the VRC Ascot Vale Handicap and Sirius who scored in several good country Cups races. But by far his best horse was the immortal Vo Rogue who won 26 races and earned more than $3 million in prizemoney. Rail's best wins as a trainer included VRC Australian Cup (twice Vo Rogue), Turnbull Stakes (Vo Rogue), Futurity Stakes (Vo Rogue), Blamey Stakes (twice Vo Rogue), Orr Stakes (three times Vo Rogue), St George Stakes (twice Vo Rogue), William Reid Stakes (Vo Rogue), AJC George Main Stakes (Vo Rogue), Alister Clark Stakes (Vo Rogue), Creswick Stakes (Vo Rogue), WTC Winfield Stakes (Vo Rogue), Brisbane Handicap (Vo Rogue), and Ascot Vale Stakes (Rode Rouge, Quegent).
