A former top jockey of the 1930s to 1940s, Tommy Dawson is rated by many as one of the best small team trainers ever produced in Australia. Dawson is best remembered for the prolific winners Charlton Boy and Ima Shadow. He rarely had more than a dozen horses in work but always had a good "bread and butter" horse who usually got through to open company.
His best horses were Charlton Boy (Doomben 10,000, QTC Sires', QTC Guineas, QTC Toorak Handicap, J.T. Delaney Quality, Brisbane Handicap, Goldmarket Handicap [2], AJC Tramway Stakes, Captain Cook Stakes), Ima Shadow (J.T. Delaney Quality, QTC Bribie Handicap, Ascot Handicap, Goldmarket Handicap, J.H.S. Barnes Plate [2], QTC Exhibition Handicap [2], Tattersall's Cumberland Cup [2], Albion Park Cup, Gold Coast Cup, Rothmans Mile, Sir Winston Churchill Stakes), Ivanhoe (QTC Sires'', Hall Stakes, QTC Guineas, Doomben Stakes), Lochinvar (BTC Newmarket, Tatt's President's Mile [2]), Albion Park 2000, QTC Toorak), Midswain (Moreton Handicap, Summer Cup), Night Charmer (QTC Guineas, Sapphire Bracelet), Lord Diere (Goldmarket, Ascot Handicap), Spritely Jet (Bribie Handicap [2]), Blessed Proof (Ascot Handicap), Princess Tiber (Goldmarket), Cinderella Stakes (Summaraye) and Ross Stakes (Midswain).
