A chairman of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club (1933-45) he is credited with the idea for the Doomben 10,000. A popular publican he owned many good horses including Highland (1925-26) and High Rank (1941) who won Stradbroke Handicaps while High Rank (1941) and The Image (1943) won the Doomben Newmarket (later the 10,000) for him. Amberhill was also a smart two-year-old owned by Ahern.
