One of the truly amazing success stories of the Australian turf. Tasmanian-born Robert Heathcote was originally a tour guide, among other jobs, in Europe but in the mid-1990s took up training to help his older brother Wayne who was a prominent owner at the time. Heathcote virtually taught himself to train by reading books and absorbing everything other trainers told him. Within just over a decade he had trained more than 500 winners and won the Brisbane trainers' premiership in 2008/09.
Some of his best wins include the Ipswich Cup (Our Lukas x 2), Grand Prix (Bell Academy), Coca Cola Stakes (Chenar), BTC Champagne Stakes (Funtantes), Brisbane Handicap (General Minolta) Recognition Stakes (Malta, General Minolta), QBBS Classic (Yoruba), Super QRIS Final (Wayjo), Summer Stakes (Fine Action), Yuletide Cup (Bails), Magic Millions Plate (Gundy Son), Tatt's Life Members' Cup (My Limit), QTC Members' Cup (Game On), Queensland Day Cup (The Kildare Kid), Ascot Bar Handicap (Noble Gaze), QBBS Stakes (Chenar), Tooheys Handicap (Malta), Victory Stakes (Buffering), Seymour Cup (Our Lukas), Roman Consul Stakes (Buffering), Juanmo Stakes (Funtantes).
