A heavyweight jockey who had a wonderful strike rate during a career which spanned little more than a decade. Noel is the only one in Queensland history to win the Brisbane apprentices', jockeys' and trainers' premierships.
He formed a lethal combination with his father Fred Best in the 1950s when they had some outstanding horses including the top stayer Book Link. Best won his first Group 1 race at just 16 when he took the Doomben 10,000 on Murray Stream.
His best wins included the Stradbroke Handicap (Plato), Doomben 10,000 (Murray Stream), QTC Derby (The Wash, Book Link), QTC Guineas (Book Link, Friar's Frolic, Neptunist), Queens Cup (Book Link), Labour Day Cup (Book Link), J.H.S. Barnes Plate (Book Link, Hydrogen), STC Railway Stakes (Book Link), QTC St Leger (Book Link), QTC Metropolitan (Lancaster), Canty Flying (Mr Standby), Ipswich Cup (Forge), Toowoomba Cup (Carpooe), Stanley Stakes (Kev Mar), Tattersall's Cup (Battle Abbey), QTC Suburban Stakes (Battle Abey), AJC St James Stakes (Fort William), Piccaninny Stakes (New Joy), Albion 2000 (Sumarco), Hopeful Stakes (Thurlow), ITC Anderson Stakes (Wedborough) and Tatt's President's Handicap (Another Law).
