A loyal Queenslander, Mike Pelling, a devoted family man who wanted to bring up his family in Brisbane, rarely rode outside the state. But he built a record which saw him considered among the elite jockeys to be produced here. Pelling was also a thinker away from the racecourse inventing the famous Pelling Pacifiers which now used worldwide. When a bad back forced him out of the saddle he concentrated on his business interests.
Pelling's big time winners included the Doomben 10,000 (Unequalled, Laurie's Lottery), QTC Derby (Mr Cromwell), Grand Prix (Mr Cromwell), VRC Dalgety Stakes (Mr Cromwell), QTC Guineas (Insecure), Ascot Handicap (Unequalled), Brisbane Handicap (Mighty Grey, Sovereign Chief [2]), Exhibition Handicap (Luminia), Coca Cola Stakes (Our Horizon), Lord Mayor's Cup (Sovereign Chief [2]), McDougall Stakes (Scomeld), Queensland Cup (Jovial Knight), AWA Stakes (Handsome Prince), King George IV Stakes (Handsome Prince), QTC St Leger (Midnight Babe), Ken Russell Memorial (Tristram, War Baron), Chairman's Handicap (Full Suit), Tommy Smith Slipper (Prince Regent), Labour Day Cup (Red Chiffon), Uhr Quality (Night In Paris), Freshman Stakes (Prince of Rory), Frazer Handicap (Lord Medes), T.J. Smith Classic (Regal Advice), BTC Sprint (Taos, High Signal), Doomben Roses (Queenstown Kate), Meynink Stakes (Best Northern), Doomben 10,000 (Suntain), AWA Stakes (City Hall), QTC Lightning (Hot To Race), Starlight Stakes (Another Southern), Bribie Handicap (Hot To Race), Caloundra Cup (Midnight Babe), Toowoomba Cup (Gentle Wind, Flawlessly) and Weetwood (Gene's Interest, Fond Return, Archikeela).
