A former NSW country jockey, Michael Cahill's career really took off when he moved to the Gold Coast in the mid-1990s. Cahill mixed riding in Australia with regular stints in Asia. He rode in Singapore, Macau and Hong Kong with plenty of success.
During his initial Queensland stint he was a prolific winner of more than 500 races in five years. He had a great association with the smart gallopers St. Basil and Falvelon.
Some of his best wins included the Stradbroke Handicap (St. Basil), Doomben 10,000 (Falvelon), BTC Cup (Falvelon), Winter Stakes (Russeting), Moonee Valley Champagne Stakes (I Am a Ripper), P.J. O'Shea Stakes (Natural Blitz), QTC Cup (Gallopini), Prime Minister's Cup (My Duke), BTC Champagne Classic (Alpine Express), Goldmarket Stakes (Heather), Ajax Stakes (Normal Practise), Todman Stakes (Great Crusader), Premier's Cup (Theseo), Weetwood Handicap (October Grey), Doomben Roses (Avilde), Dane Ripper Quality (Our Sweet Moss), Exhibition Handicap (Waterford Road), Eye Liner Stakes (Corregidor), Bribie Handicap (Sukram), Caloundra Cup (Fast Future) and Dane Ripper Stakes (Vietnam).
