Regarded by many as one of the best apprentices to ride in Queensland, Merv Wrigley rode well over 100 winners before his 17th birthday. His later career was hampered by weight but he rode a string of big race winners in the 1960s. He later trained for many years and from a small team had plenty of smart gallopers including Benelate, Plenty of Polish and Joli Bebe.
His best wins as a jockey included Doomben Cup (High Society) Tattersall's Cup (High Society), Weetwood (Wine and Song [2]), QTC Metropolitan (Cachondeo), Barnes Plate (Cachondeo), Doomben Stakes (Norse,Sir Kade), Risdon Stakes (Queenstar), Hall Stakes (Intrigued), Tattersall's Presidents Handicap (Westdale), Ahern Stakes (Intrigued), City Handicap (New Romance), Tattersall's Members Cup (Prunda), Ross Stakes (Daldior), Bundall Stakes (Basalt), Chelmer Stakes (Justincase), Christmas Sprint (New Joy), Tatt's Club Stakes (Nancy Margaret), Caddell-Garrick Handicap (Desert Beau) and Easter Cup (Cachondeo).
