One of the doyens of Queensland racing, John Finnie's name appears in the feature winners lists from the 1870s to 1920s. He is also remembered as a breeder and his sire Newbold got Ben Bolt, the first Queensland horse to win the Caulfield Cup. He owned Gold Tie when it won its' first Stradbroke in 1918 and he also won the Stradbroke with Sweetheart in 1899. His other good horses included Nemo, Newbold, Medusa, Sydney, Lurline, Black Paint, and Goldfinder.
