The owners of the famous Lyndhurst Stud they were the instigators of a feature race for two-year-old fillies. The first running of the McDougall Stakes in 1924 was hailed as a major success. Fittingly John won the race three times with Gold Frock, Sage Bird, and Serede. John McDougall had top class stayers from their sire The Buzzard (who got two Melbourne Cup winners). Their best horses included Blue Slipper, Blue Vest, Blue Boots, Autobuzz and Cowl.
