A legend in Toowoomba racing Ross was apprenticed in Sydney and also rode many winners in the northern rivers where he was leading apprentice for three seasons. He moved to Toowoomba in the mid-1940s to complete his apprenticeship. In all he won the Toowomba jockeys premiership 13 times (nine in a row) and rode around 1800 winners. He won the Toowoomba Cup four times on Mokeld, Kandain, Brother Mac and Barrylyn's Idol. Ross was a leading Downs steward for many years until he retired in the early 1990s.
