Originally from Melbourne, Kelleher was a miner who came to Brisbane to work for a French company constructing a sewerage tunnel. He stayed at a boarding house in the heart of Brisbane's racing district and had a bookmaker's licence by the age of 22. He stayed for a further 50 years being generally considered the longest serving bookie in Brisbane.
