The son of top jockey Frank Cook, Graham was always going to be a superstar. He rode his first city winner on Countwood in the 1959 Queensland Guineas which was the first of a record six wins in the Guineas. For another 40 years Cook rode with great success in Brisbane and overseas, including a stint in Singapore.
It is estimated Cook rode at least 2000 winners during his career which was a marvellous effort because he had some shocking injuries at times. He is one of only a few jockeys to win all of the Brisbane big four – Stradbroke Handicap, Doomben 10,000, Brisbane Cup and Doomben Cup. Cook also holds the record for a Brisbane based jockey winning the most Winter Carnival feature races.
His big wins included the AJC Epsom, (Leonotis) Stradbroke Handicap (Spedito, Dancing Poet), Brisbane Cup (Mode), Doomben 10,000 (Spedito), Doomben Cup (Golden Khan), QTC Oaks (Mode), QTC Grand Prix (Mode), QTC Sires' (Maybe Lad ), T.J.
