Considered by many as one of the best apprentice jockeys produced in Queensland, Glen Killen outrode his allowance by the time he was just 18. He is best remembered for his rails hugging ride to win the 1977 Stradbroke on 100-1 shot Sir Wisp. He later had a wonderful association with the stayer El Laurena who he rode into second place in a Melbourne Cup. Killen also had a great association with trainer Bruce McLachlan. Some of Killen's best wins included the Stradbroke Handicap (Sir Wisp), Prime Minister's Cup (Tubbarubba), Ipswich Cup (Shazoom), Ramornie (Black Shah), Recognition Stakes (El Laurena), Healy Stakes (Sublimate) and Exhibition Handicap (Raywell, El Laurena, Our Compromise).
