George Moore is not only rated as the greatest jockey to be produced in Queensland but also Australia. Moore also ranks with the world's greatest riders. Born in Mackay, in north Queensland, Moore came to Brisbane in the late 1930s as an apprentice with Louis Dahl. He then transferred to Jim Shean where his 'stablemate' was another star rider Neville Sellwood. Moore rode his first metropolitan winner on Overdraft at Eagle farm in 1940.
He won a jockeys' premiership during the war years and then moved to Sydney where he was to become the king forming a wonderful partnership with champion trainer Tommy Smith. The pair were famous for their public bickering but were an unstoppable force for 30 years. By the time he retired in 1971 he had ridden 2278 winners of which 312 were stakes class and 119 Group 1s. He holds the record for the most Group 1 winners by an Australian jockey. Moore won the Sydney jockeys' premiership 10 times. His greatest riding feat was at the AJC's 1969 Easter Carnival where he rode 15 of the 29 winners. Moore also rode with great success in England and France. After a stint as a trainer in France he moved to Hong Kong where he won the trainers' premiership 11 times. His best wins as a jockey included:
