George Maxted

Originally from West Australia, Maxted was the most flamboyant bookie to field in Brisbane. He was king of the ring in the 1940s and he was probably the first to realise he needed a gimmick or publicity to draw customers. Some days he would even field wearing a pith helmet. He was also among the first to introduce "runners" which led him to receive a couple of suspensions from authorities.
