Fred Shean was originally from central Queensland and was a member of one of Queensland's best known racing families. Shean ode with great success in Brisbane in the 1930s but is best remembered for his efforts in the south in the 1938/39 season. In that period he won the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups and some other of Australia's best races.
His best wins were the Melbourne Cup (Catalogue), Caulfield Cup (Buzalong), Epsom Handicap (King's Head), AJC Oaks (Sweet Myrna), AJC Doncaster (Goose Boy), AJC Metropolitan (Dashing Cavalier), Williamstown Cup (Manolive), Eclispe Stakes (Manolive), VRC St Leger (Tranquil Star), AJC Sires' Produce (Shannon), Gimcrack Stakes (Merry Smile), AJC Chipping Norton Stakes (Lough Neagh [2]), AJC Rawson Stakes (Lough Neagh [2]), Doomben 10,000 (Tippler), Brisbane Cup (Lough Neagh), QTC Sires' (Auto Buzz), Moreton Handicap (Lady Bine), QTC St Leger (Pandion), Canterbury Stakes (Lough Neagh), AJC Tramway Handicap (Lough Neagh[2]), Randwick Plate (Lough Neagh), King's Plate (Lough Neagh) and Cumberland Plate (Lough Neagh).
