Doug Messingham rode with great success in Brisbane, interstate and overseas during his career in which he was regarded as great money rider. He was the stable rider for trainer Alf Sands in the late 1960s and early 1970s and they combined for some huge plunge wins. Messingham also had a reputation for picking up lucky rides, twice getting last minute bookings for Group 1 wins.
