Bruce Brown was the first Brisbane-based trainer to win the Golden Slipper with Calaway Gal in 2002. But he actually won another $1m two-year-old race earlier with Emma's Affair. The son of champion kiwi trainer Sid Brown (of Triton and Daryl's Joy fame) Brown had a steady string of winners after settling in Brisbane in the early 1980s. His best wins included the Golden Slipper (Calaway Gal), Pelican Waters Classic (Emma's Affair), Prime Minister's Cup (Starmaker), Bernborough Stakes (Starmaker), Ipswich Cup (Dixie Kid), McDougall Stakes (Calaway Gal), QBBS Breeders' Classic (Morning Lover), BTC Stakes (Halison) and Caloundra City Cup (Dixie Kid).
