A Cairns-raised stockman, Brian Mayfield-Smith trained a huge privately owned team for Millie Fox in Sydney in the 1980s. In the 1985/86 season he beat the previously invincible Tommy Smith to claim the Sydney trainer's title. He won three Sydney premierships and trained 31 Group 1 winners.
His first good horse was Tiger Town which won the Ajax Stakes and Frederick Clissold Stakes in Sydney. Tiger Town was beaten a nose in both the 1976 Epsom and 1977 Stradbroke. His other smart horse Torbodol won six races around Brisbane in the mid-1970s. Mayfield-Smith was a regular in the Group 1 winners circle in the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1995 he quit to work in wildlife conservation in Africa, but returned in 1997 to train in Melbourne. He again retired in 2009 after costs proved too much for his stable.
Just a few of his best wins included the Golden Slipper (Marauding), Sydney Cup (Late Show, Marooned), VRC Derby (Handy Proverb), VRC Oaks (Diamond Shower), AJC Sires' (Diamond Shower), AJC Doncaster (Magic Flute), AJC Metropolitan (Brindisi), L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes (Oliver Twist), AJC All Aged Stakes (Rare Form), QTC Derby (Handy Proverb, Bravery), QTC Oaks (Bravery), Canterbury Guineas (Rare Form), Segenhoe Stakes (Late Show) and Thousand Guineas (Magic Flute).
