A three times premiership winning jockey in the early to mid-1960s, Arthur Lister was the number one jockey for the powerful Fred Best stable during that period. He is estimated to have ridden more than 1800 winners during his career in Brisbane and interstate. On his retirement, Lister ran a stud and also had a small team as a trainer. He also wrote a very good book on his career and life. His son Mark has also had a long career as a jockey.
His best wins as a jockey in Queensland included the Doomben Cup (Winfreux), QTC Oaks (Ryeleah), Barnes Plate (Winfreux), Exhibition Handicap (Persian King), Ascot Handicap (Persian King), Weetwood (Clear Profit), QTC Metropolitan (Ribbon Wood), Labour Day Cup (Near Light), Tattersall's Cup (Winfuex [2]), Albion 2000 (Firebox, Otway Bay), BTC Summer Cup (Marioca), Bremer Stakes (Red Shah), QTC Toorak Handicap (Persian King, Clear Profit), Grange Plate (Scolvin), Splendide Stakes (Gellette), Claret Stakes (Scovlin), Doomben Stakes (Todwana), Sapling Stakes (Kalamia, Southport Star), Sandgate Handicap (Penny Polo), Lonergan Stakes (Calazio), O'Mara Stakes (Persian King) and Goldmarket (Emborne).
