His trainer Eric Kirwan always rated him very highly without the horse having any luck. It was with little wonder as Mr Merrymaker won the Bernborough Handicap and six other races but he was also placed in the QTC Grand Prix, Courier Mail Classic, and Castlemaine Stakes (T J Smith Classic), in the mid 1980s. Many believe he should have beaten top filly Our Sophia in the 1985 Grand Prix.
