Raced 1940s
Probably more bets are won on arguments about Herbert River than any other horse to race in Queensland. Herbert River was having his ninth race start when he won the Townsville Cup on July 19, 1947. Ridden by Jock Gollogly snr, it was Herbert River’s first win in a race but he had been placed at both Randwick and Moorefield in Sydney before going north. Herbert River was third in the Cleveland Bay Handicap as a maiden the previous week. Trained by Maurice McCarten and owned in north Queensland by R.L. Atkinson, Herbert River also won that year’s Ingham Cup. Herbert River was later a good Sydney stayer winning a Christmas Cup for George Moore and an Autumn Handicap. He later returned to win a second Ingham Cup.
