The younger brother of top stayer Earlwood, he has his own place in Queensland race history. Countwood gave a teenage jockey Graham Cook his first feature race win when he took the 1959 QTC Guineas. Cook also showed the stewards room style which later saw him hard to beat on and off the track when Countwood survived a protest. Countwood later won the QTC St Leger and QTC Frazer Handicap but generally struggled in open company.
