An amazingly popular horse with the public for his honesty on the track and his beer drinking habits off it. He had some great battles with another sprinter Bengalla Lad who was the same age. They filled the placings in the same race 14 times during their careers. Trained by Tommy Dawson, Charlie had a huge fan base and the roar could be 
heard a kilometre away the day he finally won a big four race in Brisbane - the 1974 Doomben 10,000. Not that he hadn't won a major race beforehand having taken the QTC Sires, Queensland Guineas, QTC Toorak Handicap, Delaney Quality and Randwick Tramway. He had a good record with other jockeys but saved his best for Mel Schumacher who rode him in the 10,000. The Shoe won nine races on him including the GCTC Goldmarket (twice), Brisbane Handicap and the Captain Cook Flying.
