Australia has a rich history in the field of the automatic totalisator with the first one in the world being invented in Australia in 1913. The one installed at Eagle Farm in 1917 was only the third one in the world. These early Australian totalisators are regarded by some as the first computers and there are many anecdotes relating to the totes in Brisbane.
